Kindergarten student practicing writing in a K2 classroom @ Safari Kid Pokfulam center in Hong Kong

K1-K3

2 years 8 months to 6 years old

Classes are bilingual (English/Mandarin) with one Native English and one Chinese teacher present at all times. Teacher/Student ratio is 1:8

The K1-K3 curriculum at each stage is more advanced than the equivalent class in international systems or the local Hong Kong system. By the time your child reaches K3 at Safari Kid, the curriculum is equivalent to the Primary 1 curriculum in Hong Kong

Our Half-Day classes for K1-K3 run from 9:00 am to 12:30pm, Monday to Friday. We customise the program to each child. As soon as the child is ready, they will begin on the curriculum for the next level. As a result, by the time children are at K3 level (if they start with us at K1), most Safari Kids are covering Primary One (Hong Kong system) or Year 2 (international system) curricula.

Our Early Years Program focuses on four fundamental development areas – Cognition, Language and Communication; Personal, Social and Emotional development; Creativity and Imagination; and Physical Development. These fundamental development areas inform eight specific development areas – Reading and Language Arts; Writing; Understanding of the World; Confidence and Public Speaking; Self Expression; Science and Technology; Mathematics; and Logic and Reasoning. The learning is imparted through our four learning pathways – interactive learning; playing and exploring; cresting and thinking critically; and revisiting and reinforcing.

Mandarin is an integral part of the Safari Kid program, and our Mandarin curriculum follows the same principles as our English curriculum. All classes are bilingual and Mandarin instruction (with traditional Chinese characters) is imparted every day. For more details on our Mandarin Program, please see here .

Each area of development is focused on during every week. Structured language and math learning via our proprietary curriculum and teaching practices takes place for 30-45 minutes each day. Daily free play in our large play area develops the physical, social and emotional selves of the children. Dedicated time is allotted for role play, creative arts, imagination building activities (such as aided and unaided story telling), explorations in science and technology and games that aid the development of logic and reasoning.

Detailed assessment reports are produced every term (though assessment is ongoing) across all the twelve development areas. Children can transition from one Level to the next as soon as they’re ready (even in the middle of the term), and we work closely with parents on a transition plan ahead of time.

A brief summary of the child’s progression through the levels for some of the specific development areas is below:

Reading, Writing and the Language Arts

K1 introduces children to uppercase and lowercase letters, beginning sounds, and builds fine motor skills to develop writing ability. By the middle of K2, children can read and write basic three letter words and start constructing (on paper) short sentences. In K3, children are introduced to punctuation, sentence construction and reading comprehension amongst a variety of other language techniques.

Mathematics

In K1, children learn to count up to 30, and are introduced to the concept of ‘before’ and ‘after’. K2 introduces basic addition and subtraction, numbers up to 100, and counting in multiples (this aids in the ability to do quick mental math later). K3 expands on the concept of multiples and halves and introduces techniques that aid in mental math in addition to the concepts of Time and Money.

Public Speaking and Confidence

Children get used to expressing themselves in front of adults and peers early at Safari Kid. From K1 onwards, children are encouraged to talk about their interests and make ‘presentations’ to the class. Children actively participate in our school productions in front of an audience of their teachers, parents and peers, building confidence and the ability to ‘face the crowd’. This also enhances leadership skills. Time is also spent on fine tuning soft skills that go with presentation making.

Science and Technology

At Safari Kid, explorations in science and technology include introduction to the Continents and the Solar System and the planets K1 students, enquire into natural phenomena like evaporation, rain, tides etc. (in various stages) and much more. Lego WeDo robotic kits are introduced in K3 so children can build their own circuits and robots, and basics of algorithmic thinking are introduced through games and apps like Tynker.

Understanding of the World

The entire curriculum revolves around monthly themes, and each month, the teachers focus on the different development areas through the theme. The themes are powerful concepts for developing an understanding of the wider world. For example, ‘Summer’ could be a monthly theme, and during that month, through various activities and projects, children will learn several concepts relating to ‘summer’ that helps their understanding of the world around them.

Extended Day Program

Our Extended Day Program runs from 9:00am to 2:30 pm every day. Parents have a choice of Mandarin or Creative Play in the session post lunch. Our Mandarin program in the Extended Day sessions focuses further on character recognition and character tracing in traditional Chinese in the afternoons.

Full Day Program

Parents can also opt to enroll for our Full Day Program that runs from 9:00am to 5:00pm every day. The Full Day program incorporates one after school activity (at the choice of the parents) in addition to the Extended Day program. After school activities available are drama, art, music and movement, and additional languages, among others.

Accelerated Learning Programs

The definition of Accelerated Learning goes hand in hand with our mission. Accelerated Learning is the most advanced teaching and learning method in use today. It’s a total system for speeding and enhancing the learning processes. Based on the latest neurological research, it has been repeatedly proven to increase learning effectiveness.

What makes our Accelerated Learning program so effective is that it’s based on the way we all naturally learn. Accelerated Learning unlocks much of the potential for learning that has been left largely untapped by most conventional learning methods. It does this by actively involving your child, using physical activity, creativity, music, images, color, and other methods designed to get children deeply involved in their own learning.
